Fed: Make water bans permanent: Fischer

Former National Party leader TIM FISCHER says water restrictions in capital cities
should be made permanent, to force councils and householders to install eco-friendly irrigation
systems.

Water restrictions are in place in most capitals as Australia remains in the grip of
a prolonged drought.

Mr FISCHER says Australia is the driest inhabited continent on earth, and its occupants
have no choice but to get water usage right.

He says this means installing smart drip irrigation systems -- particularly as new
suburbs are developed.

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR recently said the current restrictions may become
a way of life for city residents.
