WA: Cyclone Gwenda set to cross north west coast

Tropical Cyclone GWENDA is set to lash the West Australian coast with winds of up to 250
kilometres an hour.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts the category four cyclone will cross the coast at
around midnight near Port Hedland, in the state's remote Pilbara region.

The bureau warns destructive winds and heavy rain will sweep across far north-west
communities tonight.

SES spokesman JIM BURNETT says cyclone GWENDA has the potential destructive force of
Cyclone VANCE, which devastated the region 16 days ago.

He's warned people to take cover, and not go out in the cyclone.

Residents should seek adequate shelter, board up their homes, fill their cars with fuel,
collect fresh water, carry first aid kits and ensure their children and pets are safe.

Cyclone VANCE is the worst cyclone on record to hit Australia.
