Qld: Man accused over Keyra said death must have been mistake

By Suzanne Klotz

BRISBANE, Aug 28 AAP - A man accused of murdering a nine-year-old girl said that if
he did do it, he must have "snapped", Brisbane Supreme Court was told today.

Leonard John Fraser, 49, of Baker Street, North Rockhampton in central Queensland,
has pleaded not guilty to murdering nine-year-old Keyra Steinhardt on April 22, 1998.

Keyra was attacked while she was walking through an allotment on her way home from
school, with witnesses seeing a man rape her, then stash her body in the boot of his car.

A number of people put Fraser at the scene at the time of the attack and DNA tests
revealed Keyra's blood and hair was found in the boot of Fraser's girlfriend's car.

Today, a taped police interview was played to the Supreme Court jury of Fraser talking
to police after he had just shown them where the body was hidden in bushland, north of
Rockhampton, two weeks after Keyra's death.

"It'll be something that's just gone wrong, I'm being honest on that. Maybe she had
a weak skull or that," he told police.

"I'm still coming to terms with it, if I did do it."

Fraser claimed to police in taped interviews that he must have "snapped" and hit Keyra
as she walked home from school, but his memory of the incident and his subsequent hiding
and dumping of the body were "hazy".

"I know a lot of people say I'm callous, but I know myself it must have been an accident,
and that like something went wrong," he told police during the conversation in the car
on the way back to the station.

The trial is continuing before Justice Ken Mackenzie.

Vic: Unions go to court in attempt to save Telstra jobs

Vic: Unions go to court in attempt to save Telstra jobs

Unions will go to court tomorrow, claiming Telstra plans to discriminate against union
members when it begins culling thousands of jobs later this year.

Four unions representing Telstra employees will seek an urgent Federal Court injunction
to prevent up to 16,000 job cuts foreshadowed in the company's half-year report.

They believe an internal e-mail reveals the telecommunication giant's intention to
target Telstra's unionised employees in preference to workers on individual contracts
when it begins the cull.

Community and Public Sector Union state secretary STEPHEN JONES says staff are fearing
for their jobs and fearing for their freedom of choice.

Telstra expects to finalise by the end of the month its strategy to cut 16,000 jobs,
which is a part of a $650 million cost saving exercise.

What the nation s papers say today, January 19, 2000

SYDNEY, Jan 19 AAP - National Party leader John Anderson is stupid and wrong to warn
MPs not to cheat on their spouses, says The sydney Morning herald in an editorial today.

"... it suggests that the private life of a politician is fair game for the media,"

the paper says.

"The tendency in Australia has been for the media to allow politicians and public figures
to enjoy whatever form of private life they want to live ... except when the behaviour
of the politician concerned is so outrageous (or bordering on the illegal) that the …

VIC: CFMEU pays tribute to union giant, Norm Gallagher

MELBOURNE, Aug 26 AAP - The late boss of the notorious Builders' Labourers Federation, Norm
Gallagher, was a giant of the union movement, the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy
Union (CFMEU) said today.

The former BLF secretary died in a Melbourne hospital last night, aged 67.

He was jailed and the BLF was deregistered after a Royal Commission into the union's
activities uncovered more than $150,000 worth of gifts to Mr Gallagher and his organisers.

After a short term in Pentridge, Mr Gallagher was still defiant, saying he had been set up.

Many BLF members later joined the CFMEU, which today said it was important to recognise Mr
Gallagher's "powerful contribution to the lives of working people in the building industry."

"In a career of 30 years he typified the old BLF motto, 'Dare to Struggle, Dare to Win' and
in so doing transformed the Builders' Labourers Federation from a struggling organisation to a
powerful fighting unit which contributed to many advances for builders labourers across the
country," the CFMEU said in a statement.

"Norm Gallagher helped lift the heads of a group working people who had very often treated
as third class citizens by employers and governments.

"The fighting spirit that Norm helped create lives on in the militant, disciplined and
united organisation that the CFMEU is today."

The union offered its condolences to his children, Sharon and Wayne.

WA: Cyclone Gwenda set to cross north west coast

WA: Cyclone Gwenda set to cross north west coast

Tropical Cyclone GWENDA is set to lash the West Australian coast with winds of up to 250
kilometres an hour.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts the category four cyclone will cross the coast at
around midnight near Port Hedland, in the state's remote Pilbara region.

The bureau warns destructive winds and heavy rain will sweep across far north-west
communities tonight.

SES spokesman JIM BURNETT says cyclone GWENDA has the potential destructive force of
Cyclone VANCE, which devastated the region 16 days ago.

He's warned people to take cover, and not go out in the cyclone.

Residents should seek adequate shelter, board up their homes, fill their cars with fuel,
collect fresh water, carry first aid kits and ensure their children and pets are safe.

Cyclone VANCE is the worst cyclone on record to hit Australia.
